Description
NGC 7023, also known as the Iris Nebula, is a beautiful reflection nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, about 1,300 light-years from Earth. It was discovered in 1794 by William Herschel.
The nebula shines because dust particles within it reflect the light of a nearby young star, HD 200775. This reflected starlight gives the nebula its distinctive bluish color, similar to other reflection nebulae. Surrounding regions also contain darker clouds of interstellar dust and gas.
NGC 7023 spans roughly 6 light-years across and is part of a larger complex of interstellar material within the Milky Way Galaxy. Because of its structure and color, the Iris Nebula is a popular target for astrophotographers and amateur astronomers.
